  • Prepare an Emergency Kit:
    • Drinking water (at least 3 days’ supply per person)
    • Non-perishable food
    • Torches and extra batteries
    • First aid kit and medications
    • Important documents in waterproof containers
    • Battery-powered radio
    • Cash in small denominations
    • Extra clothing and blankets
    • Essential toiletries
    • Emergency contacts list
  • Protect Your Home:
    • Elevate electrical appliances and valuable items
    • Check if downpipes are free from leafy material and obstructions
    • Identify and prepare to shut off electricity, gas, and water supply if needed and if safe to do so
  • Plan for Evacuation:
    • Know your evacuation routes and local emergency shelters.
    • Prepare your vehicle with a full tank of fuel and emergency supplies.
    • Have a plan for pets and livestock.
    • Communicate emergency plans with family members.
  • During a Flood
    • Move to higher ground or the highest floor of your home.
    • Stay away from drains, rivers or fast flowing water.
    • Listen to emergency announcements for updates and instructions.
    • Avoid using electrical appliances if water is present.
  • If You Must Evacuate:
    • Leave immediately if instructed by authorities.
    • Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters.
    • Use designated evacuation routes and avoid shortcuts.
    • If trapped in a vehicle, abandon it and seek higher ground if safe to do so.
  • After a Flood
    • Ensure Personal Safety:
      • Wait for official clearance before returning home.
      • Avoid floodwaters, which may be contaminated or hiding hazards.
      • Check for structural damage before entering buildings.
      • Avoid downed power lines and report them to authorities.
    • Clean Up Safely:
      • Wear protective clothing, gloves, and boots.
      • Use proper ventilation when cleaning and disinfecting.
      • Dispose of contaminated food and water supplies.
      • Photograph damage for insurance claims.
    • Seek Assistance:
      • Contact emergency services for medical or structural concerns.
      • Apply for disaster relief if applicable.
      • Check in with family, friends, and neighbors to ensure their safety.
